General Education Updates

• College Board Opportunity Scholarship: $500
  • College Board reminds rising high school seniors to include at least six colleges or universities on their college list using BigFuture™. It awards 500 scholarships each month January through March and 100 per month April to June. Families earning under $60,000 annually receive one additional entry.
  • Deadline: June 30, 2021
• University of California System
  • UC admissions announces its new standardized testing plans for future college-bound students. They intend to discard SAT/ACT requirements by 2025. The UC system goes either test-optional or test-blind for incoming classes until then.
• University System of Georgia
  • Georgia public universities require SAT/ACT scores beginning 2022. However, they assure a holistic admissions review process, deeming that standardized test scores hold less weight than student achievement [for the academic section]. This affects twenty-six schools.
• Rick Clark at Georgia Institute of Technology
  • The Director of Undergraduate Admission, Rick Clark, shares advice for prospective students. He wants them to think big-picture on their applications, rather than focus on perfecting every minute detail. Instead, he asks students to create an application with one main point about themselves that admissions officers could summarize in a single sentence.
• Please Talk to Your Kids About Money
  • Liz Gyori from Collegewise discusses how parents should broach college finances with their child(ren). She breaks it down to three simple steps: educating, assessing, and taking stock. These should help prepare both children and parents in a comfortable, open manner.
• When to Let Juniors Own Their College Admissions Process (Hint: It’s Now)
  • Patti Miller from Collegewise explains why parents should allow their children to take responsibility for the college application/admissions process. She explains how much more satisfying students feel, it instills trust, and strengthens support. Miller emphasizes communication for both parties.

Programs/Opportunities, Scholarships, & Research

Humanities (Journalism, Law/Politics, etc.)

• Young Filmmakers Contest: Varies per Grade Level
  • The One Earth Film Festival hosts a video contest on environmental and sustainability issues. Applicants must create a three to eight minute video or a forty-five second short on a designated topic that describes a solution. Anyone in third grade to age twenty-five from a U.S.-based educational institution, school, college, or university (in addition to the Australian Roots and Shoots Program) can participate.
  • Deadline: January 9th, 2022

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)

• Supporting STEM Scholarship: $1,000
  • HoshizakiIceMaker.com opens their annual college student scholarship for this upcoming academic year. The winning student can spend their $1,000 on any school-related fees (books, tuition, housing, etc.). Applicants must be a senior in high school or undergraduate in college; hold a minimum 3.0, cumulative GPA; declare a STEM major with twelve credit hours per college term in the U.S. (attending plus residing within the U.S. as well), all while modeling dedication, leadership, and character through various prompts.
  • Deadline: June 30th, 2021
